Originally, Wheelchair Basketball was first introduced to Malaysia in 1997 by having a few players attending an International Training Workshop in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Soon after, the National Team was set up to participate in the 1999 7th FESPIC Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
In the early 2000s, a Wheelchair Basketball Mobilising Committee was established. Under the leadership of the coordinator, Mr. Ang Kean Koo, the sports spread like wildfire throughout Malaysia. It was then appeared and later became one of the staple events in the year 2000 10th Bi-annual Paralimpiad National Tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2002, Malaysia was registered to be one of the members of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF). Later in 2005, Malaysian Wheelchair Basketball Federation (MWBF) was successfully registered with the Malaysian Sports Council Office.
MWBF is a non-profit Sports and Recreational Body that promotes, develop and encourage the disabled community to join Wheelchair Basketball in the National and International level. From the early 2000s to the late 2020, the sport is popular among students, especially in Bangi Industrial Training and Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled (PLPP Bangi), Selangor.
MWBF has and will continue to strive forward in conducting various activities, including unearthing talents of new athletes, training technical officers and guiding new leaders especially among the disabled community, to develop the sport in the national and international level.
